Quartzsite Boondocking

So Many Spots To Choose From!

We created a quick YouTube video for those of you who do not want to read.  Full blog post is located under the video.

After attending the 2019 Xscapers Bash in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, we made our way down to Quartzsite, Arizona to do some boondocking and attend the Big Tent Show.  We already chronicled The Good and The Bad of the show in a pair of previous blog posts.  This post will strictly be about our experience boondocking, and the town of Quartzsite.

Quartzsite is the boondocking capital of the US.  Every year thousands and thousands of snowbirds flock to the area to relish in the mild climate and free boondocking.  RaeLynn needs a strong cell signal to teach ESL classes online, so we wanted to make sure we boondocked as close to a cell tower as possible.  The cell tower is located in town and from the reviews we read online, if you can see Quartzsite from your RV, you should be able to get good signal.  Quartzsite is surrounded by BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land and you can stay 14 days for free.

We opted to stay in the Scadden Wash area as it was very close to town and the Verizon cell signal was excellent. We found the Dome Rock area to be much more scenic and less populated, but the 4G cell signal was not nearly as strong.  Our coordinates and a map to our exact location in Scadden Wash is shown below.

Spacious And Packed…At The Same Time

When we pulled into our site, we noticed there were many more RV’s than we anticipated.  After speaking to the neighbors, we were told everyone was in town to attend the Big Tent show.  Before leaving Lake Havasu, we dumped our tanks and made sure our fresh water tank was topped off.  We plan on boondocking for at least a week and nobody wants to run out of water or cope with a full black tank.

The feeling surrounding Quartzsite is strange on the senses.  After attending the Xscapers Bash and then staying in an RV park for a couple of days, Quartzsite feels vast and open.  However, at the same time, the place feels packed to the gills.  You see all these RV’s in the desert, but they are far enough away that you don’t really hear the sound of people.  The only giveaway is the faint sound generators in the distance, or the occasional loud truck.  Its the feeling of being completely alone while living in New York City.

Relaxed To The Point Of Boredom

Quartzsite is not exactly chock full of things to do.  Most people come to the area in an attempt to save money on travel expenses and take in the Big Tent Show.  We took the time to perform some RV maintenance (More on that in a later blog post) and do some mountain biking.  Check out this huge cactus just outside the Scadden Wash area.  We were suprprised it was still standing due to the number of holes in its trunk.

We spent time hanging out with friends and enjoyed the occasional campfire.  The mild weather is amazing, but we have had enough of the desert and crave green landscapes.  Our next stop will be just outside San Diego and we are looking forward to seeing the ocean.

How Much To Dump Our Tanks!

Before leaving Quartzsite, we opted to dump our tanks in town instead of waiting until we get to San Diego.  We have large holding tanks, and hauling an extra 1000 lbs does not exactly increase the Ram’s gas mileage.  Outside the Scadden Wash area is Rose RV Park.  If you are boondocking, it is a place you can get fresh water and dump your tanks.  The jaw dropper was the dump fee.  For an RV our size, the price is $15 to dump the gray and black tanks.  Its a little steep in our opinion, but we have a 4 hour drive ahead of us and the lighter the RV, the better the mileage.
